Errors and variations: Several changed flags plus many text variations.
This set is generally named "Wer nennt die Länder, kennt die Fahnen" and all cards are known with this title. However some cards also exist with the title "Wer kennt die Länder und ihre Fahnen". The set is divided into various series and the second title appears to be restricted to the series 1-5 and 10. Presumably "Wer kennt ..." is therefore the original title, and was subsequently changed.
The album notes that there was a first version of the set with "about" 300 cards and that the second version contains "about" 850 cards. Possibly the first version refers to the "Wer kennt ..." cards. The set was then renamed and extended. Some of the cards themselves give the number of cards as "about" 800.
The official Massary list given below lists 863 cards. There are indeed 863 distinct card numbers in the set. However the Abyssinian "Nationalflagge" in series 36 exists in two versions numbered "ein Bild" and "2", so that there are only 862 different flags which can be collected. However several cards were changed to correct errors which are not noted in the list. There are also many variations in the text on the cards.
Some versions of the album have spaces for cards 26a, b and c in series 5 but these were not issued. The official Massary list states that some albums were printed with spaces for these cards by mistake.
Some of the cards in Series 1-5 have the series number in larger text. However as far as I can see, any given card only has one size of text. The only exception I have found is Series 4, Bild 22 (illustrated below) which was re-issued to correct a mistake (purple bands on flag instead of red) and exists with both sizes of text.

There seem to have been quite a few different backs to these cards. One version (presumably the first) gives the set title as "Wer kennt die Länder und ihre Fahnen?" (Who knows the countries and their flags), the others giving the title as above.

There also seems to be some variation in the albums. Some stop at page 63. Others have a page 64 with a section called "Verschiedenes" (various) while yet others seem to have several "various" pages. Presumably this section could be used to stick changed cards in, although there is at least one card with instructions to stick it in this section. I have also seen albums in which the pages were interspersed with adverts for the cigarettes. It is not clear whether these were only present in some albums originally or whether collectors found them a nuisance and ripped them out. |
